Jim Shultz is the Founder and Executive Director of The Democracy Center, an NGO originally operated out of San Francisco, Ca, dedicated to supporting and training thousands of social and environmental justice advocates across the US, Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Since 1998, he moved his office to Bolivia and he and his family have been living in Cochabamba since then. During the Cochabamba Water Revolt he and his colleagues provided essential, on-the-ground reporting, from the center of the conflict. His advocacy work, reporting and groundbreaking book Dignity and Defiance, helped spread the word about the Cochabamba Water War and globalize this issue by bringing it to international attention. He and the Democracy Center, later led the global campaign that forced Bechtel to drop its $50 million lawsuit against the people of Cochabamba (Democracy Center, n.p.). His goal is to make sure “David beats Goliath” as often as possible.
